When should I see a chiropractor?
Whether your condition just started or you’ve been dealing with it for years and tried many other treatments, it’s rarely ever too soon or too late to seek treatment from a chiropractor or massage therapist.
Chiropractors are trained as “portal of entry” providers. Our patients don’t need a referral from their medical doctor to come to us, so we receive extensive training in school on how to take a full medical history and physical examination in order to properly diagnose whatever condition comes into our clinic.
Where we differ from our medical colleagues is that prescription drugs, surgery, and injections are outside of our scope of practice, so the care we offer is conservative, non-invasive, and very safe.
For this reason, chiropractic care is an excellent first choice for your aches and pains. If your condition doesn’t respond well to a trial of chiropractic care within 2-4 weeks, then your chiropractor can order additional testing or make appropriate referrals to other specialists to help manage your case.
One of the most common things we hear from our new patients is, “I wish I would have come sooner.” Many people arrive at our clinic only after trying more invasive procedures that didn’t resolve their conditions. While these procedures can be very effective for the right patients, many people can recover from their injuries and/or manage their pain well with more conservative treatments such as chiropractic care.
When should I see a massage therapist?
A question we hear a lot is “is this a muscle issue or a bone issue?” The easiest answer to that question is that it is usually both!
This is why massage therapy and chiropractic go hand in hand. It is hard to injure a joint without affecting the muscles that surround that joint and vice versa, since almost all muscles cross a joint, connecting one bone to another.
Massage therapists treat many types of soft tissue and muscle disorders – from muscle strains during your favorite sporting event, to that ball of stress that you carry in your shoulders constantly.
Today’s massage therapists do more than just rub your back. They are trained to skillfully apply techniques to treat a wide array of soft tissue dysfunctions, such as
- Trigger points, or “knots” in your muscles
- Restrictions between muscles and the fascia, or connective tissue surrounding them
- Edema, or swelling from a recent injury
- Morning stiffness associated with age and/or arthritis
- Post workout soreness from lactic acid build up
- Repetitive strain injuries
