After a long summer break, the Catalyst Chiropractic Newsletter is back in action. We hope the summer treated you all well. We met a lot of new patients this summer – many being referred by our loyal patients. We thank you for your referrals and do our best to treat your family and friends right.
As school is back in session, we are bringing you some tips to keep those young spines healthy this school year. Read on to learn more about backpack safety and spine-friendly habits for your young ones.

Big backpacks can mean big problems

Don’t let your kids out the door in the morning if they look like this ——->
To set those small spines up for success, keep the following backpack guidelines in mind:
  1. The pack should weigh less than 10% of the child
  2. Use both straps, and make sure their well-padded
  3. Keep the straps tightened, don’t let the pack hang low

Spare those growing spines

Has your child ever complained of back pain?
In a recent edition of “The Back Letter” an eye-opening fact was brought to our attention. It states “that children and adolescents report low back symptoms almost as frequently as adults (LWW Vol. 29, No.9, Sept 2014).” As your kids end their summer activities and return to their school year routines, keep the following in mind to spare their young spines and keep them out of pain.
  1. Movement is life. It also helps our joints stay healthy. Kids spent a lot of their class time seated, so when they get home give them some time to play and move before sitting down for homework or crashing on the couch to watch tv.
  2. Homework and reading should be done at a table or desk, not on the couch, bed or floor. A supportive chair at a table is more conducive to maintaining proper posture for homework. Just make sure theydon’t sit for more than an hour at a time.
  3. Substitute the chocolate milk for a water bottle. Our joints need to be hydrated to thrive. Make sure your child is getting plenty of H2O.
  4. Get serious about bed time. The school day can start pretty early for some of our kids, so make sure they are getting a good night’s sleep to let their bodies and minds rest and recover.
  5. Avoid “Text Neck” like the plague. See this video to learn how.

Ask Dr. T: What about inversion tables?

I field this question on an almost daily basis. The basic premise of inversion (hanging upside down) is that while you are inverted, the space between your vertebrae increases. This can possibly decompress bulging discs, relieve pressure on irritated or pinched nerves, and generally reverse the stress that gravity constantly places on your spine when you are upright.
It all sounds great, but no matter what the infomercials tell you, it does not work for everybody and it does have risks. If you are interested in inversion therapy or purchasing an inversion table yourself, please consult with me first. I will help you identify if your condition might respond well to inversion and if you have any health conditions that may preclude you from using this therapy.
