Tricks: “Modifying” your cancer risk
Breast Cancer Awareness
Our newsletter is going pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. This topic hits close to home, as we and many of our patients have loved ones who have been struck with this disease or have fought it themselves.
Cancer isn’t always preventable, but researchers have identified certain risks that are “modifiable.” In other words, we have control over some of the causes of cancer. Here are a few things that we can all do to keep our cancer risk as low as possible:
  • Limit alcohol: Alcohol consumption has a direct relationship to breast cancer.
  • Don’t smoke: Tobacco use is also gaining more evidence as a way to increase breast cancer risk.
  • Control your weight: Being overweight, especially if you gain it after menopause, makes you more vulnerable.
  • Be active: 30 minutes of moderate intensity cardio exercise per day keeps many ailments at bay.
  • Breast feed: Besides being great for kids, it can also protect the mother from developing breast cancer.
  • Eat your veggies: Honestly, research conflicts on whether a good diet can prevent breast cancer, but it certainly can’t hurt! If anything it will help you control your weight, which is linked to breast cancer risk.
  • Get checked! Do NOT undervalue the importance of self exams, regularly scheduled OB/GYN exams, and mammograms. These are life-savers. One year my wife found out she had a lump at her annual check up. It thankfully turned out to be benign, but it served as a good reminder of how important these exams are.
Stay healthy out there,

Treat: It’s a boy!
Dr. Thompson and his family were blessed with the best treat ever this month: The birth of their second baby boy, Ty Thompson. He was born on October 1st. He and mom, Melanye, are both doing great, although one of them is definitely getting more sleep than the other! Thank you to everyone for being so accommodating while Dr. Thompson was out for a few days to be with his family.
