June 2013

May was a bittersweet month here at Catalyst, as we said goodbye to Annie but hello to our two new office managers, Amber and Ashley. They have hit the ground running and we are off to a great start here in June.
This month we are focusing on headaches. This year approximately 75% of Americans will get at least one headache. Headaches are one of the most common symptoms that we see here in the clinic, and our patients often get significant headache relief through chiropractic care. Read below for more information on how you can find natural relief to your headaches.
Yours in health,

Ask Dr. Thompson
“Doctor, I’m looking for natural remedies for my headaches. What are my options?”
There is rarely one simple solution to a headache. Most often there are multiple causes that all culminate with inflammation of the nerves around the skull. Anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen work well at calming those nerves down but aren’t a good long term solution. Instead, combat the root causes of that inflammation by addressing the following culprits:
1. Physical: Spinal misalignment and muscle tension are present in both tension headaches and migraines. Chiropractic care, massage therapy, postural advice, and corrective exercises are all effective natural remedies.
2. Mental: Stress and lack of sleep have been proven to cause headaches. It’s no wonder so many people have headaches! Here’s a little secret: 6 hours of sleep isn’t enough! Shoot for 8 hours of sleep. Also, chill out! Stress increases our cortisol levels, which suppresses our immune system and impairs our body’s ability to heal. Take up a hobby, practice your religion, meditate, do breathing exercises – there are as many ways to decrease stress as there are to get stress. Find what works for you and make it part of your daily routine.
3. Chemical: This category ranges from food allergies to substance abuse. To keep it simple, here are three things you can do:
  1. First, follow an anti-inflammatory diet. For more info on this, click here –> www.deflame.com
  2. Avoid tobacco and alcohol. Both are common causes of headaches.
  3. Consider the following dietary supplements:
  • Magnesium: Deficiency of this vitamin is very common in migraine sufferers and research shows it can be effective in reducing frequency and severity of migraines
  • Vitamin B2: Another natural migraine remedy, B2 shows some of the most promising results in studies.
  • Fish oils: Specifically, EPA and DHA have many health benefits, one of those being a natural anti-inflammatory
